Historic Review Planning Records, 1912-2008 [bulk 1988-1992]
Scope and Contents
The Historic Review Planning Records are housed in 37 boxes and are arranged into three series. The records consist of subject files, photos, and slides from various Historical Review Commission projects, primarily from the 1980s and 1990s. Included in the subject files are many drafts and copies of HRC pamphlets from historic districts along with information about specific historic buildings and sites in Pittsburgh. Many of the photos included in the collection feature buildings or structures that were slated for demolition, buildings that were renovated or restored, or new buildings located on existing historical sites. Historic districts, such as Manchester and South Side, are well represented throughout the collection.

Biographical / Historical
Since 1977, the Historic Review Commission (HRC), under guidance of the Pittsburgh Department of City Planning, provides residents with information and rules regarding potential exterior renovations or demolitions to buildings that are in designated historic districts or are considered a historical landmark. Comprised of seven members appointed by the Mayor, HRC members must consist of “an architect, a preservationist, a realtor, a building inspector, and a planner.” Provisions for historic districts and the Historic Review Commission were first implemented via Ordinance 35 of 1977 and amended via Ordinance 20 of 1979. Today, the Commission’s meetings occur once a month and are open to the public.
The records in this collection were initially the alphabetical subject files of Michael Eversmeyer, a historic preservation planner for the Department of City Planning who was responsible for facilitating the Historic Review Commission’s meetings starting with his arrival in 1985. The files were supplemented with additional material by other planners upon his departure.
