City Planning Department Map Collection, 1909-1997
Scope and Contents
The City Planning Department Map Collection contains oversize records including maps, plans and drawings on a variety of projects and subjects, especially pertaining to land use and redevelopment. The records were not consistently collected or arranged in a systematic method, but rather amassed by Planning Department staff over a period of about 80 years and stored in map cases in the Department’s offices at 200 Ross St.
The collection is arranged according to subject in the following six series: Series 1: Transportation; Series 2: Redevelopment; Series 3: Land Use; Series 4: Public Safety; Series 5: Census; Series 6: Infrastructure. Biographical / Historical
The Pittsburgh City Planning Department, created in 1911 by Mayor Magee, is responsible for guiding land use policies and programs for the City of Pittsburgh.
