Scope and Contents

The Shade Tree Commission Records contain three annual repots, 4 photographs, a pamphlet with text of the 1928 Shade Tree Ordinance, samples of pressed leaves, and newspaper clippings pertaining to the activities of the Shade Tree Commission and the Forestry Division of the Department of Public Works. The collection was formerly maintained by the Forestry Division and does not provide a comprehensive or continuous record of the Commission's activities.

Biographical / Historical

On October 14, 1909, Pittsburgh adopted a resolution accepting the provisions of a state act of May 31, 1907, "providing for the planting and care of shade trees on highways of townships of the first class, boroughs, and Cities of the Commonwealth of Pennsyvlania, and providing for the cost thereof." The first commissioners were appointed by Mayor Magee on Feb. 1, 1910, and consisted of E. M. Bigelow, E. S. Morrow and W. D. Grimes. The Commission held its first meeting on April 8, 1910, and spent most of its first year studying the methods of similar organizations throughout the country. In November of 1910 the Commission planted its first tree on Beech Avenue in the North Side.
