Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps
Scope and Contents
The Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps contain 17 volumes of Pittsburgh insurance maps (1925-1927) and one volume of Homestead insurance maps (1926). Each volume contains updated correction slips from the 1930s and 1940s.

Biographical / Historical
The Sanborn Map Company published fire insurance maps during the 19th and 20th centuries depicting hundreds of municipalities throughout the country. The maps include a variety of information about specific properties and buildings including use, size, shape, house and block number, the existence of fire suppression systems, and more. Between new editiions, subscribers had the option to order updates or correction sheets to be glued onto the maps as needed. The maps in this collection were published from 1925 until 1927 and were updated through the late 1940s.

Custodial History
The volumes were transferred from the Permits, Licenses and Inspections Department (PLI) in 2020. The volumes were formerly maintained by the Bureau of Building Inspection until the creation of PLI in 2014.
